5/28/06 Fun and Sun Open Lake Whitney, TX
The tournament day was greeted with overcast conditions and a stiff wind.
The tournament started slow for Keith Combs and Russell Cecil. With the
conditions, a spinnerbait or a crankbait looked to be in order. After the
reaction bite only yielding white bass and strippers the duo changed location
and techniques. The pair picked up their Carolina rigs and Big Bite Pro Lizards
in pumpkinseed chartreuse. The Carolina rig immediately produces a four
pound keeper for Combs. A few cast later Cecil added a two pounder that would
later be culled. With the technique and a bait that was producing bites the team
began running and gunning spots with the Pro Lizard. This was the ticket. They
enjoyed an all day bite culling through approximately twenty keepers to cull to
the winning weight of twenty pounds. After deciding the lizard was the best bait
they were able to revisit the spots that only produced stripers and white bass
with success. As time was running out a Big Bite Yo MaMa in green pumpkin
produced a final four pound cull from some isolated cover. It was a perfect
tournament for the team and they out distanced the nearest competitor by nearly
four pounds.
